Proposal Requires Background Notifications For Online Dating Users

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP)  -- Internet dating services would have to tell Illinois subscribers whether other users have undergone background checks under a proposal the House approved Wednesday.

The legislation would not require Web sites like www.match.com and www.eHarmony.com to perform checks on subscribers for sex offenses or other felony convictions. But their sites would have to indicate whether they do.

Sites failing to notify subscribers could face a fine of $1,000 or more.

Republican Representative Bill Black of Danville says adults--not the state--should be responsible for who they chat with over the Internet.

The measure was approved 74-to-36 and now moves to the Senate.

(The bill is HB5299. On the Net: www.ilga.gov.)
