Grenade-Shaped Bottle Causes Evacuation
|
NEW YORK (CBS) -- Part of the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal was evacuated on Tuesday after the discovery of a "suspicious device" that turned out to be a harmless bottle of perfume shaped like a hand grenade.
Spokesman Tony Ciavolella said the north wing, located between 41st and 42nd streets and Eighth and Ninth avenues, was evacuated at 11 a.m., and reopened at 12:10 p.m.
The bomb squad determined that the "suspicious device" was a perfume bottle. It was left on top of an empty plastic bag in a passenger area of NJ Transit, Ciavolella said.
Ciavolella said the terminal's south wing, located between 40th and 41st streets, was not affected.
On Monday, Pennsylvania Station was also briefly evacuated and all train service was suspended because a suspicious package -- a duffel bag containing trash -- was found amid the city's extra-vigilant security surrounding the Sept. 11 anniversary and the visit of President Bush.
