A 14-year-old teenager riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) died when his vehicle slammed into a telephone pole and his head struck a spike.
The teenager was riding the ATV about 1 p.m. Saturday near his home in unincorporated Will Township when he possibly lost control of the vehicle and struck the pole, Will County spokesman Pat Barry.
A witness told police she saw the teenager stopped at a stop sign, and a few minutes later heard the sound of a crash, Barry said.
Tom Aguilar, of 30137 S. Egyptian Trl. in Peotone, was pronounced at St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields at 1:30 p.m., a spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Sunday.
Barry said the teenager was riding the ATV along the road, and then crashed the vehicle at 30429 S. Egyptian Trl., which is a rural area. The teenager was wearing a helmet, yet the spike on the pole struck his head. The spike was possibly used to assist utility workers in climbing the telephone pole.
The Will County Sheriff's office is investigating the death.
