$1M settlement for woman in icy-road crash

WAUKEGAN (STNG) -- A Buffalo Grove woman has received a $1 million settlement for damages incurred in a three-car collision three years ago.
Marissa Palmer, 22, was the plaintiff against defendant and former best friend Dana Horowitz of Highland Park, according to attorney Francis Patrick Murphy, who represented Palmer along with Edward Willer of the Chicago law firm Corboy and Demetrio.
Palmer and Horowitz were undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin when the collision occurred in November 2006, according to Murphy. They were traveling in Horowitz's Jeep Cherokee from Madison to Highland Park on roads that were icy from freezing rain and falling snow.
Witnesses were prepared to testify at trial that Horowitz was driving about 60 mph while other drivers were doing about 25 to 30 mph, Murphy said.
Horowitz lost control of the Jeep, causing her to travel eastbound into the grassy median toward the westbound traffic lanes. The Jeep went airborne when it slid through the median, nailing another car in the westbound lane. The Jeep rolled, at which time Palmer was ejected from the vehicle. At that point, another vehicle struck the Jeep.
Palmer was the only person injured in the accident. She suffered spinal, neck and rib fractures, a lacerated spleen and liver, a closed head injury and road rash injuries on her back, Murphy said.
The matter was brought before Circuit Judge David Hall on Monday.
