'Person of interest' in Deadly Hit-And-Run
CHICAGO (STNG) -- Police continued to question a "person of interest" Wednesday night after a bicyclist was caught in a gang-related conflict between two drivers and was fatally struck Tuesday by a van in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood
Jepson Livingston, 32, of 2706 N. St. Louis Ave. was hit while riding a bike at 3827 W. Diversey Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 12:57 p.m.
A Wednesday autopsy revealed Livingston died from multiple injuries from a van striking a bicycle and the death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.
The cyclist was struck by a van about 12:30 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. It appears the van veered into the path of the bicycle and struck him. The driver of the van then fled on foot, leaving the vehicle at the scene, reportedly with passengers inside.
Police said two vehicles were involved in the incident and said the drivers of both vehicles were involved in a gang-conflict prior to the accident. Livingston was apparently an "innocent bystander."
A "person of interest" remained in custody at 9 p.m., although charges had not been filed, police said.
A police source said the incident does not appear to be "accidental."
Grand Central Area detectives are investigating with the Major Accident Investigation Unit.
