Teachers strike closes schools in south suburbs
|
MARKHAM, Ill. (CBS) ― Don't send your kids to school on Thursday if you live in District 144 in the south suburbs, because teachers in the Prairie Hill Schools will be on the picket line rather than in the classroom.
The teachers have called a strike, and all classes and extracurricular activities are canceled until further notice.
It affects schools in Markham, Hazel Crest, Oak Forest, and Country Club Hills.
The district Web site said some progress has been made on insurance and retirement issues, but the board and teachers are still far apart on salaries.
Negotiations broke down late Wednesday night, with the board offering a 3 percent increase over the next two years, and the union demanding a 6.5 percent increase.
