CHICAGO (STNG) -- Police are investigating a possible methamphetamine connection after a sport-utility vehicle was discovered abandoned Saturday night after crashing into a North Side garage.
About 6:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to calls of shots fired at a vehicle in the 5800 block of North Broadway, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Responding officers found an unoccupied SUV smashed into a brick garage in the 5800 block of North Magnolia Avenue. Upon closer inspection, police saw "containers that appeared suspicious inside the SUV" and called the Chicago Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team, Mirabelli said.
The HazMat Team was contacted about 11 a.m. Sunday for "unmarked barrels," which turned out not to be dangerous, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.
A methamphetamine investigation is being conducted at the address, a law enforcement source said. Further details were not immediately available. Police News Affairs could not confirm a methamphetamine investigation.
Mirabelli could not confirm whether there were gunshots in the SUV or if it appeared the occupants were wounded before fleeing.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
