Shotgun lands off-duty Chicago Fire Lt. behind bars

CHICAGO (STNG) -- An off-duty Chicago Fire Department lieutenant was charged with having a sawed-off shotgun which he fired at a person breaking the windows of his minivan Monday morning on the South Side, police said.
Timothy Hicks, 47, of the 8200 block of South Wentworth Avenue, was charged with possession of a shotgun with a barrel length that was less than 16 inches, according to police, who said Hicks is a Chicago Fire Department lieutenant.
Hicks was held on $10,000 bond Tuesday, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin. He will appear for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 18 in Far South Felony Court (Br. 38).
Police officers learned the weapon, a sawed-off shotgun, was of an unlawful length after measuring it when they were doing inventory on the items in the incident.
The incident occurred about 5:50 a.m. Monday when Hicks heard a noise and realized it was someone breaking the windows of his Honda Odyssey minivan that was parked outside near his home, according to police.
Hicks allegedly grabbed the shotgun and fired a shot at the offender who ran away, according to police.
Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said the two fought before the vehicle’s owner fired a shot at the offender, who was known in the area.
Sometime later a man showed up at an unidentified hospital with a wound from a shotgun but police were not able to connect it to the incident with Hicks and said it may have been a coincidence.
The victim with the shotgun wound told authorities he was shot 20 blocks away from where the Wentworth Avenue address.
The suspect who broke the windows of Hicks’ minivan was not in custody Tuesday afternoon.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
