Fort Hood Victim Remembered At Chicago Vigil
|
CHICAGO (AP) ― Friends of a pregnant U.S. Army private slain at Fort Hood are holding a vigil at the soldier's family home in Chicago tonight.
Twenty-one-year-old Pvt. Francheska Velez was among 13 killed last week when a fellow soldier opened gunfire at the base in Texas. Dozens were injured.
Friend Sasha Ramos says funeral arrangements have not been made because it's unclear when Velez's body will be flown back to Chicago.
Velez was preparing to return to Chicago from Fort Hood before being killed. She'd recently returned from deployment in Iraq.
Family members describe her as a sweet girl with a childlike spirit, and say she sought a lifelong career in the Army.
Also killed in the attack was 22-year-old Pfc. Michael Pearson of suburban Bolingbrook.
