Legionnaires' disease blamed for 2 Ill. deaths

VERNON HILLS, Ill. (AP) - Two people at a suburban Chicago nursing home have died from Legionnaires' disease, and a third case has been confirmed.

Health officials are interviewing staff and residents at The Park at Vernon Hills trying to determine if there are more cases.

One person died in September, and the second died last week. Jane Woloson, the home's executive director, says both people had other health issues.

Authorities are also investigating the cause of the outbreak. The disease isn't contagious and is contracted by inhaling contaminated mist or vapor.

The nursing home has a rain forest, waterfall and spa in its atrium. Those have all been shut down. Officials say it doesn't appear that the illness has spread outside of the facility.

The Park has about 260 residents.
