Murder suspect charged with failing to disclose HIV

GARY, Ind. (STNG) -- A northwest Indiana murder suspect has new felony charges filed against him allegedly failing to disclose that he's HIV-positive.
Willie Lee Steele, 42, of the 1000 block of Harrison Boulevard in Gary was charged with failure of a carrier of a dangerous communicable disease to warn a person at risk, a charge punishable by up to three years in prison, and misdemeanor criminal recklessness, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
Steele, a convicted killer and rapist who was arrested Saturday for questioning in the deaths of the aunt and grandmother of a Gary police officer, had been having unprotected sex for months with his girlfriend, court records state.
The girlfriend, who had been dating Steele for nine months and declined his Valentine's Day marriage proposal as premature, told police Steele got sick and had a boil by his thigh.
She and his sister took him to the hospital. Steele told her he had cancer, but she discovered he is HIV-positive.
Steele had told the woman he'd been in prison and had been tested for AIDS and HIV and was negative. A search of the woman's apartment during the homicide investigation uncovered his HIV medication.
The woman said Steele had choked her and would pin her against the wall. He would get "that look" which she described as having "death in his eyes like he's going to kill somebody," the probable cause affidavit states.
When his family came to the Gary police station to speak with Steele on Monday, he told them he was "sorry for what he had done and he was just tired and didn't feel like he could cope in the outside world," the affidavit said.
Steele has been questioned in the deaths of Doressa Miller, 52, and her mother, Lillie Miller, 79, the aunt and grandmother of Gary police Patrolman Damon Bradshaw.
He also was charged this week with failure to register as a sex offender.
