M.E. investigator still critical after shooting

CHICAGO (CBS/STNG) ― An investigator for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, remains in  critical condition early Thursday, a day after being shot while trying to detain a suspicious man South Side apartment building.

Anthony King, 40, remained in critical condition Thursday as of 4:05 a.m., according to Stroger Hospital of Cook County spokesman Marcel Bright.

"There's been no real change,'' Bright said.

King is scheduled to have more surgeries later Thursday after undergoing one surgery early Wednesday, according to Bright, who said King suffered one gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police said the other two victims also remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The shooting happened at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday in the first floor hallway or vestibule area of an apartment building at 6916 S. Oglesby Ave., according to police, who said before the attack the two suspects were inside the building knocking on doors when residents got suspicious.

The residents had approached one or both of the suspects and asked them what they were doing and they responded that they trying to buy drugs but police believe they were probably planning on doing something more serious, according to police who said there was no indication the residents knew the suspects. Investigators do not know what they planned on doing.

Two residents of the building, 35 and 56, were assisting King with one of the men, who was armed, according to a Grand Crossing District police captain. They were "holding onto him" until police could arrive.

They recovered the gun but the accomplice of the suspect came from upstairs and opened fire, striking the three.

The man holding the gun taken from the detained man dropped it and the suspect and his accomplice took the weapon and fled, according to the captain.

The medical examiner's office said King is a death investigator at the office and he lives with his mother across the street from where the incident occurred.

The 56-year-old man who lives on the second floor of the building on Oglesby suffered a gunshot to the left hip, according to the captain. The third victim, a 35-year-old man who lives on the first floor on Oglesby was shot in the back, mouth, face and the left shoulder. They were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital.

King's mother, Leola King, does not wish to give interviews at this time but she did issue a brief statement, Bright said. "He is a hero to me and I just want him to get better and come home. I am so glad he is here (Stroger Trauma Unit). The doctor (Andrew Dennis) has been wonderful. After speaking with (the doctor) we are all optimistic."

Calumet Area detectives are investigating, and neighbors are say more people need to speak out about violence in the community.
