CHICAGO (WBBM) -- The official who manages the City of Chicago’s fleet of vehicles says new SUVs being purchased by the Police Department are turning out to be a better deal than they’d expected.
Police Supt. Jody Weis wants to replace much of the Department’s aging fleet of police cruisers with Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs. These SUVs are not gas guzzlers, says Michael Picardi, Commissioner of Fleet Management. He says they get better mileage than the Ford Crown Victorias on the street now.
And he says, they’re turning out to be cheaper to take care of, if the experience of other cities is an example.
The Tahoes are also able to use E-85 ethanol for fuel.
The police department has contracts to puchase as many as 2,000 Tahoes in the coming years.
