Extra alarm fire at cup factory
|
CHICAGO (CBS/STNG/WBBM) ― An extra-alarm fire broke out early Wednesday at the Solo Cup factory on the city's Southwest Side.
The fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. at the factory, located at 7575 S. Kostner Ave. near the Ford City Mall, authorities said.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said the fire was raised to a 2-11 alarm about 4:45 a.m.
About 200 employees could be seen standing -- chilly and coatless -- outside the large factory after it was evacuated.
The factory was operating when the fire broke out, according to Langford.
Langford says the fire apparently started in a piece of machinery that's known to catch fire at times, but employees usually are able to handle the situation when it does.
The fire apparently got into some duct work containing greasy chemicals.
By the 5 a.m. hour, firefighters had controlled the fire and were battling hot spots, but people were still being kept a block away. The Chicago Transit Authority has sent out warming buses to accommodate them.
No injuries are reported, but expect a traffic mess. The CTA is rerouting the No. 54B bus around the area.
