No injuries in downtown rooftop fire
|
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire that caused a plume of smoke to billow from a downtown high rise rooftop Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was reported just before 3 p.m. in the cooling tower of a 48-story building at 233 E. Wacker Dr., according to Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford.
Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which never entered the building, Langford said. The building — Columbus Plaza — is home to a combination of condominiums and rental units.
An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances to the scene, was called for the fire as a precautionary measure because it was located in a high-rise building, Langford said.
The cause is believed to have been a malfunctioning part in the cooling unit, Langford said.
The fire scene was secured about 3:15 p.m. and there were no reports of injuries, Langford said.
