Pregnant woman crashes into hydrant after 2 pina coladas

CHICAGO (STNG) -- A pregnant woman who was allegedly driving while intoxicated with her 10-year-old son in the car plowed into a fire hydrant in the Humboldt Park neighborhood late Sunday and was arrested, police said.

Nicole Gonzalez, 28, of the 3500 block of N. Olcott Ave., was charged with DUI while her license was suspended or revoked and aggravated DUI -- both of which are felonies. She was also charged with a third DUI; a misdemeanor.

Gonzalez was ticketed with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to keep in a lane, and failure to stop at a stop sign and striking fixed property, according to police.

She was arrested at 12:17 a.m. Monday at 1725 N. California Ave. and the charges were approved at 6:20 a.m. Monday, according to police.

A police report indicated officers responded to a call of an accident at the California Avenue address and found the driver leaning up against an ambulance having difficult maintaining her balance. Witnesses who had been traveling southbound on California told police they saw the woman -- whose 10-year-old son was in the vehicle at the time of the crash -- driving east on Wabansia and make a left onto northbound California at a high rate of speed. The witness said they saw her swerve a couple of times into the southbound lane and then crash into a fire hydrant, according to a police report.

Gonzalez and the boy were taken to an unidentified hospital and she initially told officers she had not been drinking. She became loud and allegedly demanded a blood test, which was given, according to the report.

An officer asked her how much she had to drink and she told the officer she had had two pina coladas, while also becoming abusive with the hospital staff and using expletives, the report said. She then said she was four months pregnant and allegedly said she “hoped” for a miscarriage so that she could sue everyone, according to the report.

She was not injured according to the report, which did not indicate what kind of injuries the boy had.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified.
