CHICAGO (STNG) -- Charges have been approved after a man was killed and two others seriously wounded when the car they were in rolled over and struck a tree during a police pursuit early Wednesday on the West Side.
Terrell Harris, 23, of 518 N. Leamington Ave., was charged Thursday at 11:25 p.m. with felony aggravated DUI, theft and several traffic related charges, according to police.
The only surviving passenger, Vincent Turner, 21, of 3040 W. Jackson Blvd., was charged at 9:15 p.m. Thursday with felony burglary, according to police.
Harrison District police were notified just before 5 a.m. Oct. 28 of a suspicious vehicle in the 1100 block of South Karlov Avenue and told the occupants might be breaking into other vehicles, News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.
Officers saw two men in their 20s inside the car and another man, also in his 20s, outside the car looking at parked vehicles. When police attempted to question the men, the car sped away at a high rate of speed, Perez said.
The officers pursued the car, which entered the eastbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) and exited at South Paulina Street, Perez said.
The pursuit ended when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree at 1654 W. Congress Pkwy. near the Paulina Street exit, Perez said.
Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said three people were initially taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County from the rollover crash.
Keirre Roberts, 23, was pronounced dead at 5:51 a.m. Oct. 28 at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. According to a Thursday autopsy, he died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a fixed object and his death was ruled an accident.
Police recovered about 10 car stereos from the back of the car, Perez said.
