CHICAGO (STNG) -- Police are conducting a death investigation after a teenage new mother from the Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side died late Sunday.
Desiree Holmes, 16, of 4043 W. Jackson Blvd., was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m. Sunday at Loretto Hospital, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Holmes had been hospitalized for a few days after suffering a liver ailment, according to the spokesman who said Holmes was the mother of a 3-month-old child.
Holmes was taken to Loretto Hospital on October 30 just after midnight complaining of abdominal pains, according to police News Affairs officer Robert Perez. She underwent surgery on Sunday and expired during surgery, Perez said.
Authorities indicated Holmes was the victim of domestic abuse at an unidentified date.
Holmes lived with her grandmother at the Jackson Boulevard address, Perez said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday.
Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
