Swine flu claims life of Long Grove woman
|
CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A north suburban woman is the latest person to die locally from the H1N1 swine flu virus, as public health officials in the area struggle to meet the demand for the vaccine.
Officials said that the 80-year-old Long Grove woman had significant medical conditions that weakened her immune system; she died Wednesday of H1N1-related complications.
Newsradio 780 asked Lake County Health Department spokesperson Leslie Piotrowski if the number of flu cases is much worse than usual.
"Flu activity has increased. We see that in school absenteeism in particular so, yes, we have seen an increase in flu activity in Lake County that's unusual for this time of year," Piotrowski said.
In recent days, the Lake County Health Department has vaccinated 12,600 people against H1N1 -- all the vaccine it had.
Since April, in Lake County alone, 48 people have been hospitalized because of H1N1. The death is the third in Lake County; the other two were Gurnee residents. As of Friday, state public health officials reported 731 hospitalizations and 28 deaths related to H1N1.
