A rainy day, watch for flooding
|
CHICAGO (CBS/WBBM) ― The rain that fell overnight is expected to leave the city soggy throughout the day Friday, and it has already left several major thoroughfares washed out.
A flood watch is in effect through the evening for much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, including all of Cook County.
The WBBM AccuWeather forecast calls for a breezy and mild day with periods of rain and a thunderstorm. Some of the rain will heavy and can lead to areas of flooding. High of 66.
Tonight, mainly cloudy, windy and cooler. Low 40.
And tomorrow, Halloween day, look for breezy and cooler conditions with clouds breaking for some sunshine. High of 50.
The ground is already saturated, and the rainfall will bring runoff with rapid rises on river and waterway levels, the National Weather Service said.
Well before the rush on Friday morning, numerous streets and viaducts were inundated with high standing water. Among them are Lake Shore Drive at LaSalle Drive, Bryn Mawr Avenue at Sheridan Road, Kedzie Avenue at Cermak Road, and 47th and Morgan streets.
The near west suburbs were also soaked. High standing water was reported at Harlem Avenue and Jackson Boulevard on the Oak Park-Forest Park border, and at North and 25th avenues in Melrose Park.
On the Stevenson Expressway, a car was reported stuck on the off-ramp at Cicero Avenue.
While Friday will be wet, the temperatures will at least be warm. At 5:15 a.m., it was already 61 degrees downtown, and a high of 63 is expected with southwest winds. But the mercury will drop after a cold front comes in Friday night, and the high on Saturday is only 51.
