ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (STNG) -- A northwest suburban man tracked down by a police dog and charged with a brutal knife attack on his 86-year-old grandmother was ordered held on $2 million bond Friday.
Daniel G. Levine, 24, of Arlington Heights is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a knife, according to Arlington Heights police.
At the Rolling Meadows Courthouse on Friday, Judge Kay Hanlon set bond at $2 million and scheduled a preliminary appearance for Nov. 12, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin.
Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, Arlington Heights police and paramedics responded to a 911 call in the 3000 block of North Carriageway Drive. The caller reported a senior citizen was bleeding and in need of immediate medical assistance.
The 86-year-old woman was treated at the scene and transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with traumatic injuries. As of Friday morning, she was list in stable condition in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the release said.
Officers interviewed a witness at the scene who said the offender, a family member, had fled on foot. Arlington Heights officers, assisted by Buffalo Grove police, began a search of the neighborhood.
The Arlington Heights K-9 Marco began tracking the offender's movements and eventually flushed him from a hiding spot, the release said. He was captured by officers after a short foot pursuit without further resistance.
Police interviewed several witnesses who had personal contact with the offender through the day. And under questioning, Levine admitted that he stabbed his grandmother with the intention of killing her, the release said.
