Man rescued from south suburban manhole

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. (STNG) -- Fire crews in the south suburbs rescued a 49-year-old man who had passed out inside a manhole Wednesday morning.
About 10:55 .m. the Palos Fire Protection District responded to an emergency call of a man who had passed out in a manhole at the intersection of Route 83 and Old Oak Trail in Palos Heights.
EMS and rescue crews got to the scene three minutes later and found the 49-year-old man unconscious, at the bottom of the hole, a release from the fire protection district said. Rescue crews were able to get the man out of the hole and he was taken to Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights in serious condition, the release said.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Illinois Department of Labor.
