Man gunned down after allegedly shooting at officers twice

CHICAGO (STNG) -- Police patrolling an area in the South Chicago neighborhood with ongoing drug and gang problems shot a man after he allegedly twice fired shots at them Saturday night.
About 10:30 p.m., officers from the Targeted Response Unit were on patrol in the 8200 block of South Marquette Avenue when they saw a man standing on a porch holding a weapon, according to a police statement. The area allegedly has had “gang-related conflicts” and “ongoing” drug sales.
The uniformed officers exited their vehicle and ordered the 41-year-old man to drop his weapon, the statement said. The man allegedly fired his weapon in the direction of the officers and attempted to flee.
Officers returned fire, striking the man, but he continued to run, according to police. He then attempted to shoot the officers again, firing his gun from behind his back while running forward, police said.
Officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times. He collapsed nearby and was taken into custody, police said. A weapon was recovered on the scene.
The man, who police say was shot in his leg and back, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.
Police said the man's condition was “stable” early Sunday.
Initial police reports that the man was robbing three people when officers shot him were false, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Ilana Rosenzweig said the agency is investigating the shooting, but had no further information available.
No charges had been filed as of 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Calumet Area detectives are also investigating.
