Gas Leak Cuts Off Service In West Rogers Park

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Thousands of people in the area around West Rogers Park have been without gas since about 10 o'clock yesterday morning and restoring service has been slow-going.
By 10 this morning, Peoples Gas says 30 percent of its customers had been re-connected. By 1 p.m., only 32 percent had been re-connected.
A Peoples Gas crew doing routine work yesterday accidentally disconnected service to about 24-hundred customers - with about 17-hundred still without gas.
The boundaries: Peterson to Touhy and California to Western.
Goldie Weil lives in the 67-hundred block of North Talman, and she says it's been a trying 24-plus hours.
"I can't cook. I can't bake. Can't do the clothes washer or dryer, because we don't have the hot water. No bathing or showering."
And she says there's no heat. The worst of it?
"Not cooking, that's the worst of it. Because you gotta eat."
Plus, she says, she has to get ready for the Jewish holiday this weekend. And she needs to cook for that.
Peoples Gas says it's had to go door to door to restore every customer's service individually.
Peoples spokeswoman Bonnie Johnson says the company hopes to have everyone's gas turned back on by this evening, but it's been a slow process since many residents are not at home, she says.
Johnson says at least two nursing homes are in the area affected but she says their gas was not off because they are on a low-pressure system and the customers affected are on a medium-pressure system.
Johnson says additional Peoples crews have been called in from other parts of the city to help restore service.
