Chicago's Olympic History

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- As Chicago moves closer to "decision day" in its quest to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, it's worth remembering Chicago has been in this position before.

Chicago was actually chosen as the host city for the 1904 Summer Olympics but then the games were moved south to St. Louis, at least in part because St. Louis was also hosting the 1904 World's Fair.

Interview: Olympic Historian John J. MacAloon

Chicago was also in the running to host the 1952 and 1956 summer games, boasting world class facilities like Soldier Field and other venues and also had the support of USOC Chief Avery Brundage, a Chicagoan. But, as reported by the Chicago Tribune, no one from Chicago's bid team actually even showed up in Stockholm in 1947 for the final pitch to International Olympic Committee members. Thus, the '52 games were awarded to Helsinki, Finland.
