CHICAGO (STNG) -- The M&M Mars candy factory on the Northwest Side reopened Monday, four days after the city health department shut its doors because of "mouse infestation," improperly stored food and gaps in doors giving rodents easy access to the building.
During a Monday inspection, city health officials noted that problems had been corrected, said Tim Hadac, with the city's health department. A tip to the city's non-emergency 311 line led to a June 21 inspection at the factory, at 2019 N. Oak Park, where fruit flies and gaps in the doors were found.
On Thursday and Friday, inspectors found the fruit fly problem had been cleared up, but noted fresh mouse droppings, improperly stored food and unsecured doors at the factory that not only produces M&M chocolate, but also Snickers bars and other candies.
Parent company Masterfoods USA issued a statement Monday: "Consumers can be assured that this brief stoppage has not impacted the quality of our products."
