Woman hospitalized after being trapped under Pace bus
|
EVANSTON, Ill. (STNG) -- A 20-year-old woman became trapped underneath a Pace bus in north suburban Evanston late Thursday afternoon, requiring an emergency services team to lift the bus to extricate her.
She suffered serious injuries but her condition was not known as of Friday morning, Pioneer Press is reporting.
The accident involved a Route 250 bus that was completing a left turn from Davis Street onto Ridge Avenue from the Davis Street CTA station to O'Hare.
Evanston Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky said Friday the call came in at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters found the 20-year-old woman under the bus with her head facing north and her upper left leg under the vehicle's front right tire, Berkowsky said.
"She was conscious and talking to us at the time," said the fire chief.
Firefighters used a 3-1/2 ton jack, step cribbing and air bags to lift the axle off the victim. Because there was only a 2-inch separation between the woman and the underside of the bus, firefighters placed a plastic tarp under the bus and slid the woman onto a stretcher.
She was transported to Evanston Hospital.
"Firefighters did a nice job of lifting the bus and quickly moving the patient without injury," Berkowsky said.
He said paramedics also checked the 10 to 12 passengers on the bus.
