CHICAGO (STNG) - A CTA bus fatally struck a 51-year-old man Thursday night on the South Side.
Emergency crews responded at 9:12 p.m. to a report of a CTA bus striking a male pedestrian in the 2000 block of East 95th Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines, who was citing preliminary information.
Michael Cordell Payne, 51, of the 10000 block of S. Crandon Ave., died on the scene at 9:20 p.m., a Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. An autopsy is scheduled Friday.
CTA spokeswoman Shelia Gregory said a northbound No.14 Jeffery Avenue bus struck a pedestrian near the bus shelter as the bus was pulling away. The pedestrian did not get on or off the bus prior to the accident, she said.
Gaines said detectives remain on the scene early Friday, and witnesses are giving conflicting statements.
None of the occupants on the bus was injured, but the driver was shaken up and talked to paramedics, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.
No citations have been issued as of early Friday, police said.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
