Bingo player pulled from scooter sues police
|
GARY, Ind. (STNG) -- A Gary, Ind. woman filed a civil lawsuit against the Gary Housing Authority and three off-duty Gary emergency officials, claiming they arrested her and pulled her off her scooter.
Thelma Fannin, a resident of Genesis Towers in downtown Gary, claims she was watching a friend play bingo but had brought her own cards. Another resident accused her of stealing bingo cards, though, and Samuel Johnson, an off-duty Gary Police Department volunteer officer, took the cards from her, according to the lawsuit.
She grabbed the cards back and began to leave on her motorized scooter. The residents again complained she stole the cards, and Johnson grabbed her, pulling her off the scooter, Fannin claims in her lawsuit.
Johnson, along with off-duty Gary firefighter Carlos Ambrosia, picked her up, and Johnson called city police to have her arrested, according to the lawsuit. She was taken to the police station but later released to a hospital for injuries.
She is suing Ambrosia and Johnson, along with Clarence Hightower, a Gary officer in charge of security for Genesis Towers.
