CHICAGO (STNG) -- Two men were charged Sunday following a shooting, car crash and foot chase with police in which an officer was injured in the Northwest Side Saturday night.
Javier Lozano, 21, of the 2300 block of North Merrimac Avenue, was charged with aggravated fleeing, attempting to elude a police officer, negligent driving, failure to give information or render aid, striking an unattended vehicle, damage to public property and operating a motor vehicle without insurance, police said.
Benjamin Santiago, 20, of the 6300 block of West Fullerton Avenue, was charged with a misdemeanor of reckless conduct.
Grand Central District police heard gunfire at 7:42 p.m. Saturday in the 2600 block of North McVicker Avenue and witnesses in the area pointed to a vehicle from which the shots were allegedly fired, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti, who was citing preliminary information.
The vehicle fled the scene and crashed about five blocks west at North Mobile and West Wrightwood avenues, Ursitti said.
Both the shooting and the crash happened near Riis Park at 6100 W. Fullerton Ave.
Three people inside the vehicle attempted to flee after the crash, but police captured all three suspects after a brief foot chase, according to Ursitti, who said a weapon was recovered.
During the chase, one officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition, Ursitti said. No other injuries were reported.
Additionally, a police car responding to the incident was involved in a minor crash, but no injuries were reported, Ursitti said.
Lozano is scheduled to appear in bond court Monday.
