Former Harvey deputy, reserve officer face drug charges
|
A former Harvey deputy marshal was booked Friday on drug charges, along with an Illinois State Police reserve officer — after the two allegedly attempted to run drugs from a wired Chicago drug dealer.
Leroy Grant was named in a federal complaint for conspiring with an unnamed reserve officer to distribute 5 grams of “sham” cocaine to a South Side barber shop in November 2008, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, the FBI obtained a document from Harvey police during its investigation, in which Grant’s name appeared under the former Harvey Police Dept. Deputy Marshals program.
The unnamed reserve officer is employed by Illinois State Police and has sold firearms to, transported drugs and stolen drugs on behalf of a Chicago drug dealer, the complaint said. The officer also helped manage traffic for Orland Park police.
The dealer, however, became a cooperating source with the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2007. Grant and the other officer were unaware the dealer provided the sham cocaine for the deal.
The men are accused of being payed $1,000 each to pick up the sham cocaine from undercover FBI agents at a Home Depot parking lot at 87th Street near the Dan Ryan Expressway, the complaint said.
In the course of the alleged deal, Grant told the dealer, “Money’s what…we here for! And if it’s easy, it’s easy!”
Harvey police could not be reached for comment Friday night.
