Daley’s Dumpster Task Force closes Mayflower Foods

CHICAGO (STNG) -- An inspection by Mayor Daley’s Dumpster Task Force has resulted in the closing of a popular Asian specialty market in Chinatown.
Inspectors visited Mayflower Foods, 2014 S. Archer Ave, Tuesday and found conditions so bad they immediately closed the business, according to a press release from the city Department of Streets and Sanitation.
Signs of an active mice infestation, including more than 300 mice droppings in the main selling area and in an upstairs storage area, as well as bags of brown rice and dried bean curd that had been gnawed into and contaminated, lead to the sinking of Mayflower.
Inspectors also reported flies inside a package of dried fish product, a cooked shrimp noodle dish stored at an unsafe temperature and an absence of required labeling on food products from Vietnam.
In addition, waste containers without lids near the rear of the business, clutter throughout the store and an utter lack of housekeeping prompted the shut-down, the release said.
Mayflower Foods was closed for the critical violations of inadequate pest control, failure to maintain food at safe holding temperatures, two instances of failing to protect food from contamination and for the serious violations of improper labeling and failing to properly contain garbage.
The Dumpster Task Force previously shut down Mayflower Foods for similar problems on February 22, 2008.
“This establishment failed to learn from last year’s closure and was closed this time around for the same types of problems,” Josie Cruz, Deputy Commissioner of Streets & Sanitation’s Bureau of Rodent Control, which operates the Dumpster Task Force, said.
In 1994 Mayor Daley formed the Dumpster Task Force so the city could enforce Chicago's sanitation code by eliminating overflowing garbage and similar conditions that can attract and sustain rodents.
