First sign of West Nile virus in Kendall County
|
OSWEGO (STNG) -- Kendall County health officials have reported the first batch of mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile virus.
The batch of mosquitoes was collected on July 13 in Oswego.
"As we move through these summer months, it is important to remember to take precautions, such as wearing insect repellent and getting rid of standing water around your house, to avoid the risk of becoming infected with West Nile Virus," according to Steve Curatti, the county's director of environmental health.
Only about two in 10 people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness. Typically, West Nile sickness is mild and includes a fever, headache and body aches, the county said. More serious illness is possible.
Additional information on West Nile is available by calling the Kendall County Health Department at 630-553-8026 or by visiting the state's public health Web site, www.idph.il.us/envhealth/wnv.htm.
