U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk has made his decision. The North Shore congressman is running for the U.S. Senate.
Kirk will announce the decision formally during a 10:30 a.m. news conference Monday at a yet-to-be-disclosed site, in his district.
Kirk's campaign office put out a press memo Wednesday afternoon that said only that Kirk "will announce his candidacy for statewide office."
A state Republican Party official indicated to Newsradio 780 that it's the Senate.
Kirk has considered a race for Senate for several months, but began giving it serious thought when Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced that she would seek re-election, instead of running for the Senate or governor.
Illinois GOP Chair Andy McKenna has indicated that if Kirk runs, he won't. National GOP strategists see Kirk as their best chance to take the seat from the Democrats.
Kirk may face opposition in the primary from State Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).
The seat is the one once held by President Obama and now occupied by Sen. Roland Burris, who was appointed by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich in December. Burris announced last week that he would not seek election to a full term.
