Wendy's employee foils robbery in Lincoln Square

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- A brave Wendy’s restaurant employee came to the aid of a 70-year-old man who was being robbed in the restroom of a Lincoln Square neighborhood eatery Tuesday, police said.

The suspect -- who allegedly struck the employee in the head -- was later arrested and charged after also head-butting a police officer. He is being held on $200,000 bond.

Darryl Ray, 21, of the 17000 block of Trapet Street in Hazel Crest was charged with one count of attempted robbery, two counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated battery to a police officer after being arrested Tuesday, according to police News Affairs.

Bond was set at $200,000 during a Thursday hearing, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin. Ray will appear for a preliminary hearing July 14 in North Felony Court (Br. 42) at 2452 W. Belmont.

Ray was positively identified as the person who allegedly grabbed 70-year-old Gheorghe Enoiu by the neck and attempted to take his wallet from his rear pants pocket in a restroom at a Wendy’s restaurant on the North Side, according to the report.

The restaurant is located at 2053 W. Lawrence Ave., according to an assistant manager who answered the phone Thursday morning.

Enoiu screamed for help and Ray attempted to flee the store but was confronted by Wendy’s employee Norberto Cambray, 24, according to the report.

A struggle ensued and Ray allegedly struck Cambray in the face and head in an attempt to get away. Cambray’s injuries required surgery and stitches, according to court records.

Police were flagged down at Lawrence and Damen, and saw the struggle, the report said. Ray was positively identified by both Enoiu and Cambray, according to the report.

Cambray was transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital for treatment and later released, according to police.

Ray received further charges stemming from a related incident at an unidentified hospital after his arrest. He allegedly attacked two officers after he was told by an emergency room doctor there was nothing wrong with him and he was able to be released, according to the report.

Ray became agitated and head-butted a police officer, managed to wiggle free and kicked another officer. That officer suffered a dislocated shoulder and various scratches and bruises, court records indicated.

Another officer suffered bumps, bruises and several scratches on her arms. Ray was returned to the Belmont District police station and additional charges were filed, according to the report.

The Wendy’s assistant manager confirmed Cambray works at the restaurant. "He could have been killed,'' the assistant manager said.

Cambray's cousin and co-worker Heraldo Chaves also assisted in the incident, he said. Cambray was not scheduled to work Thursday and the assistant manger referred further inquiries to the corporate office, where a spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
