Dogfighting charges in Lake Co. raid, 9 pit bull puppies seized

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. (STNG) - Nine pit bull puppies rescued from a Round Lake Beach dogfighting ring over the weekend were adopted by a rescue organization Wednesday, Lake County officials said.
The two-week old puppies were deemed safe for adoption and they were taken by an undisclosed agency, said Mark Pfister, associate director of environmental health services for the Lake County Health Department.
The puppies' mother, which had shown many signs of aggression, was scheduled to be euthanized as soon as the puppies left.
An adult male taken from the home has already been euthanized, and a second male is being evaluated to see if he's safe for adoption, Pfister said.
All three adult dogs have scars that are indicative of fighting, according to Pfister.
Police stumbled on the dogs Friday following an anonymous tip about dogfighting at a home in the 1400 block of Lotus Drive in Round Lake Beach.
Inside the home, which belongs to 38-year-old Enrique Hernandez-Jaimes, officers found various chains and equipment that suggested dogfighting was taking place in the home, Round Lake Beach police officer Paul Grace said.
Hernandez-Jaimes was charged with dogfighting, a Class 4 felony, and possession of dogfighting equipment, a misdemeanor.
It is not known if other dogs were involved in the fights, Grace said.
