Patients can check doctor's credentials online

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago-based group is suggesting that consumers seek information on credentials before choosing a physician.

The American Board of Medical Specialties coordinates and assists 24 different boards that evaluate and certify doctors.

Board certification is voluntary and not required to practice medicine. But it's considered by hospitals, insurance companies and some patients as essential documentation of a doctor's training and competence.

To find out whether your doctor has a board certification in a medical specialty, visit the American Board of Medical Specialties' Web site. Or call 1-866-ASK-ABMS. The service is free.
