Girl, 5, apparently drowns at family gathering

ORLAND PARK (STNG) -- A 5-year-old girl apparently drowned Saturday night while surrounded by relatives at a gathering in southwest suburban Orland Park, police said.
Stephanie Harrison, 5, of the 50 block of Anchor Dr. in Oswego, was pronounced dead at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights at 7:55 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.
Police responded to the apparent drowning in the 7800 block of Palm Drive at 7:05 p.m., according to Orland Park police Lt. John Keating, who called the incident a “tragic accident.”
The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating Harrison’s death, but has had no prior contact with the girl’s family, department spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.
“We have not taken any action regarding any other children in the home,” Marlowe said.
Keating said the girl was swimming in an in-ground pool at the home during a family gathering when she drowned. He said adults and children were around the pool area and a lack of supervision was definitely not a factor in the drowning.
“It only takes a short period of time for someone to actually ingest the water and drown,” Keating said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Sunday.
