Gun and knife arrests reported at Taste of Chicago

CHICAGO (STNG) -- Chicago Police arrested 33 people this weekend at the Taste of Chicago -- four for carrying guns and two for carrying knives, police said.
Police News Affairs Director Roderick Drew said Saturday night that 31 people were arrested at the Taste of Chicago on Friday.
Four of those people were arrested for carrying guns. One person was arrested for having a sawed-off shotgun inside the Taste and three others were apprehended with guns at checkpoints outside the event, Drew said.
Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said a juvenile was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Friday at 300 E. Jackson Dr. after police discovered a loaded sawed-off shotgun in his backpack.
Police saw the boy in a group of people showing and shouting gang slogans to another group near Lake Shore Drive. Responding officers noticed a large bulge in the boys backpack and he took off running but was apprehended at the Jackson Drive address, according to Perez.
The boy’s name was not being released because of his age, but he is expected to be charged with a felony offense, Perez said.
Two other people were arrested Friday for carrying a knife, according to Drew, who was not immediately sure if the weapons were found inside or outside the event.
Only two people were arrested Saturday and both were charged with misdemeanors, Drew said.
Several fights were reported Friday, according to Drew.
“There were a couple little flare-ups yesterday [Friday],” Drew said. “With all the officers here, they were quickly broken up.”
The first gun arrest at this year’s Taste of Chicago was made last Saturday.
Shrome D. George, 25, of the 3400 block of South Salem Court in Michigan City, Ind., was arrested after he was found to be carrying a fully loaded .9 mm handgun as he attempted to enter the event through one of the security checkpoints, police said.
