Precautions urged to secure scaredy cat pets

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) -- The July Fourth Holiday is a time of year when some dogs become scaredy cats.

Authorities are warning pet owners to take precautions to ensure their dogs don't go AWOL when celebratory fireworks start going off around Independence Day.

DuPage County Animal Care and Control officials say people should resist the urge to take pets to firework displays, to start with.

They note that animal shelters across the country taken in what they call "July 4th" dogs - dogs who run off during fireworks and get lost.

And if you leave your dog home, turn on a radio or TV so explosions outside won't be so jarring.

When dogs are alone and become frightened, they sometimes start chewing frantically. And that may not be good news for your couch.
