CHICAGO (STNG) -- A veteran Chicago Police officer has been indicted by federal authorities on a civil rights violation charge for allegedly injuring an arrestee in September 2007.
Officer Craig Swistowicz, 38, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of depriving another individual of his civil rights, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's office.
Swistowicz is accused of using unreasonable force when he allegedly struck an arrestee causing bodily injury. The incident occurred on Sept. 13, 2007, according to a federal indictment.
The use of unreasonable force is a violation of Fourth Amendment rights.
Swistowicz has been a Chicago Police officer since 1997 and was assigned to a federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force.
If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $250,000, a prison sentence of up to 10 years and three years of supervised release, the release said.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin after the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois rescued himself.
The Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Chicago Independent Police Review Authority and the Office of Professional Responsibility of the U.S. DEA jointly investigated the case.
