9 dead, several injured in weekend violence



CHICAGO (STNG)  -- Shootings claimed the lives of nine men in the city and two suburbs over the weekend. In other acts of violence a 9-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting Friday night, a woman was stabbed with a screwdriver by boyfriend and another woman was stabbed with a gardening tool also by her boyfriend.

Friday at 8:19 p.m., Tijuan Edwards, 18, was talking to a 25-year-old man in the street at 1916 S. Trumbull Ave. when multiple gunmen approached on foot and shot both men.

The 25-year-old was taken in “stable” condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to the left arm, chin and thigh, police said.

Edwards, of 1913 S. Trumbull Ave., was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which said Edwards was shot in the head.

The gunmen are in custody, but no charges have been filed yet, police said.

About 11:20 p.m. Friday, a West Side man was fatally shot in the South Side’s Englewood community.

Jovon Lee, 24, of 3406 W. Berteau Ave., was shot at 5928 S. Maplewood Ave. and was dead on the scene, the medical examiner’s office said.

Police found Lee shot in the neck.

A man was also shot and killed Friday night in south suburban Dolton.

Maurice Jenkins, 35, of 15129 Beachview Terrace in Dolton, was found shot at his home and was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:10 p.m. Friday, the medical examiner’s office said.

Dolton police are investigating but have so far not had any comment on the homicide.

About 2 a.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot across the street from his Northwest Side home.

Melvin Vallejo, 29, of 6100 W. Diversey Ave., was shot at 6105 W. Diversey Ave. and was dead on the scene, the medical examiner’s office said.

Police said Vallejo was involved in an argument that became violent and he was shot in the head.

About 2:20 a.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot on the South Side.

Rodrick Scott, 21, of an unidentified home address, was pronounced dead about an hour later at 3:34 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, after he was found shot on the 1000 block of West 60th Street.

Police are seeking six offenders who fled the scene of a shooting that left a 21-year-old man dead Saturday night in the South Side's Marquette Park neighborhood.

The man, identified as Ricardo Valdez, of 6361 S. Spaulding Ave., was shot at 5924 S. Whipple St. and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 8:50 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police responded to the shooting at 8:18 p.m., according to police News Affairs Sgt. Karla Chaplin, who said the man was confronted on the street by six Hispanic men who fled south from Whipple Street after firing shots.

Witnesses told police they heard four to five gunshots at the location. The man was struck in the right shoulder, the right back area and the nose, Chaplin said.

A man is dead after being shot while driving and ultimately crashing into a fence Saturday night in the West Side's Garfield Park neighborhood.

The incident happened at 4103 W. Madison St. at 8:50 p.m., Harrison District police said.

The man was shot while behind the wheel, causing him to lose control and crash his car into a fence, police said.

The man was identified as Willie Short, 38, of 1310 S. Ashland Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which said Short suffered a gunshot wound to the back. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Mount Sinai Hospital.

One man was killed and three other males were injured during a gang-related knife fight Sunday afternoon in west suburban Cicero.

Emergency crews responded about 1 p.m. to stabbing in an industrial area in the 6100 block of West Cermak Road, according to Cicero spokesman Elio Montenegro.

Adiel Guzman, 26, of 1835 S. 56th Ct. in Cicero, was pronounced dead at 4:51 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Two other males were also taken to Loyola Medical Center and one male was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn where he was treated and released, Montenegro said. Ages of the wounded were not immediately available.

Police learned that a gang fight between the Latin Kings and Ambrose started in an unidentified location and ended with four alleged gang members being stabbed, Montenegro said.

Detectives are investigating whether a chase preceded the stabbings and were interviewing witnesses Sunday afternoon, according to Montenegro.

Later Sunday, also in Cicero, a 17-year-old man was fatally shot.
Carlos Moutes was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital after he was shot at 5009 W. 23rd St. in Cicero, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Several others were wounded over the weekend, including a 9-year-old boy who was walking home with his family when was wounded during a Friday night shooting in the Far North Side’s Rogers Park community.

The boy was walking home with his family when he was shot at 6758 N. Ashland Ave., police said. Nobody else was wounded.

The boy was taken in good condition to Children’s Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh, police said.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.

A woman was stabbed with a branch cutter early Saturday, allegedly by her boyfriend Albert Parker, 40, of 7024 S. Clyde Ave., according to a police report.

Parker was taken into custody at 4:55 a.m. at the Clyde Avenue address and the woman was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious, but “stable” condition with multiple stab wounds, according the report.

A 19-year-old man was shot by Chicago Police Sunday morning on the South Side's Englewood neighborhood after pointing a weapon at an officer, according to police.

The man was shot by an officer in the 6400 block of South Wood Street about 11:10 a.m., according to police News Affairs. He was taken with a gunshot wound to the leg to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in good condition.

Tactical officers working in the Englewood District were conducting a directed mission in the area of West 63rd Street and South Honore Street when they attempted to approach a man believed to have a weapon, according to a Chicago Police release.

The man fled the scene, and in a gangway in the 6400 block of South Wood Street the offender turned and pointed a weapon at an officer, the release said. The officer, “fearing for his life,” then opened fire and struck the man.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A man is in police custody Saturday night after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend several times with a screwdriver and igniting his South Side apartment during a domestic argument.

Emergency crews responded to the incident at 7930 S. Evans St. at 9:21 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight, who said the situation was a domestic dispute that resulted in an arson.

Police said the domestic-related incident began when the man stabbed his girlfriend with a screwdriver several times and then set the apartment on fire in different areas, police News Affairs Sgt. Karla Chaplin said.

Both the man and woman were taken to area hospitals in serious condition, Knight said. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and the woman was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital.

Both suffered smoke inhalation injuries and the woman also suffered stab injuries, according to Chaplin, who said the woman was in the process of being transferred to another area hospital for further treatment Saturday night.

The man remained hospitalized but was in police custody, Chaplin said.

Knight said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the suspicious fire.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
