$750,000 bond for teen accused of murdering 9-year-old

Bond was set at $750,000 Saturday for the teenager accused of fatally shooting a 9-year-old girl Wednesday night on the South Side.

Davionne Whitfield, 17, of 7429 S. Normal Ave., was charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin.

Cook County Judge Israel Desierto set bond at $750,000 at a Saturday bond hearing at the Cook County courthouse at 2600 S. California Ave.

Whitfield is accused of fatally shooting 9-year-old Chastity Turner and wounding three men, including Turner’s father, during a drive-by shooting in the 7400 block of South Stewart Avenue about 7 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Chastity was wounded by someone who fired shots from a passing green van as she washed the family dog, police said.

Chastity’s father, 31-year-old Andre Turner and two other men -- ages 17 to early-30s -- suffered non-life-threatening wounds, police said.

After the shooting, officers were canvassing the 7500 and 7600 blocks of South Parnell Avenue when someone told them the teen involved was hiding at a residence, according to a police report. Officers went to the residence and found Whitfield.

Whitfield was arrested about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 7500 block of South Parnell Avenue, the police report said.

In a telephone conversation, the arrestee's mother allegedly told police “the boys from Stewart” were looking for her son because he was involved in the shooting of the little girl and when they find him they are going to kill him, according to the police report.

Police News Affairs said Friday night that Gerald Lauderdale, 19, of the 7400 block of South Normal Avenue, was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon in the shooting. It was not immediately known how Lauderdale was involved in the shooting and court records did not specifically indicate he was tied to the shooting of Chastity.

Desierto set Lauderdale’s bond at $75,000.

Chastity, of 6444 S. King Dr., was pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

A Thursday autopsy determined she died of a gunshot wound to the back and her death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.
