Ind. man gets three years after dog uncovers arson

CROWN POINT, Ind. (STNG) -- A northwest Indiana man whose burning of an abandoned office building was discovered by an accelerant-sniffing police dog was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday.
Pyro, a Lake County Sheriff's Department dog, was brought to the scene of a fire at a business office in Schneider, Ind., on May 3, 2008, by his handler Lt. Brian Marsh.
Pyro sniffed around the unused office and responded positively for accelerants in the first floor walkway area near the bathroom area.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Grant Allen Molden, 30, of Schneider, who was sentenced to three years in prison and two years probation after pleading guilty to burglary on April 21, according to a release from the Lake County Prosecutor's office.
Prosecutors said Molden entered the Cargill Grain Elevator on Parrish Avenue in Schneider, about 15 miles south of Crown Point, through a door he found open with the intent of setting the structure on fire.
The business had been closed since January 2008. Molden threw paperwork from file cabinets and desks around the floor and lit the paper with a cigarette lighter.
