Two charged in 15-mile police chase
|
CHICAGO (STNG) -- Two men have been charged for a shooting that prompted a 15-mile police chase on the Dan Ryan Expressway early Friday.
Victor Navarro Jr., 20, of the 2900 block of North Dawson Avenue, was charged with one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated fleeing the scene, police said.
Jesus Suarez, 19, of the 1900 block of North Hamlin Avenue, was charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said.
Navarro Jr. and Suarez are accused of shooting a woman about 4:30 a.m. Friday near North Ridgeway and West Chicago avenues, police said.
Harrison District police patrolling the area heard gunshots and saw a vehicle fleeing the scene. The officers gave chase and the vehicle entered the Dan Ryan Expressway near West 35th Street. The vehicle continued southbound, got onto Interstate 57 near West 99th Street and left the road a short distance later. The vehicle finally came to rest in a grassy area near a light pole just off the interstate at South Wentworth Avenue about 4:45 a.m., authorities said.
It was not immediately known if the driver intentionally left the road or lost control of the vehicle. Scattered thunderstorms were in the area during the chase and the roads were wet.
Three people inside the vehicle attempted to flee on foot, but pursuing officers captured all three and took them into custody, police said.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office declined charges on the third person, police said.
Police said weapons were recovered.
Suarez was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unidentified condition. Nobody else was injured in the chase. A female suffered a gunshot wound to the arm in the shooting that sparked the pursuit, police said.
Police believe other people with the woman may have also been wounded and fled, police said.
Illinois State Police District Chicago referred all questions to Chicago Police.
Harrison Area detectives are investigating both the crash and the shooting.
