CHICAGO (STNG) -- Two Chicago Police officers and a police dog suffered minor injuries when a motorist disobeyed a red light and crashed into two squad cars early Sunday in the Northwest Side’s Albany Park community.
Luis Miranda, 45, of the 4100 block of North Troy Street, was cited for disobeying a red light, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to yield to a vehicle entering the intersection, failure to reduce speed and damage to city property, police said.
About 4:30 a.m., Miranda allegedly disobeyed a red light at North Kimball Avenue and West Irving Park Road and struck two squad cars en route to a shots fired call, police said.
Two officers, including a K-9 Unit officer, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. One officer was taken to Thorek Memorial Hospital and the other to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Police said Sunday afternoon one of the officers was treated-and-released and the other was being held for observation.
A police dog in one of the cars was taken to K-9 Unit station at O’Hare Airport. The dog was evaluated and it was determined it was not seriously injured, police said.
Miranda was initially taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital in an unidentified condition.
Miranda is scheduled to appear in traffic court at 9 a.m. Aug. 13, police said.
