State says it has treatment for 'nature deficit disorder'

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) - June is “No Child Left Inside Month,” and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources wants you to pick your activities.

DNR spokesman Chris McCloud says the agency’s Web site includes a calendar of events that gives everyone lots of no- cost options for fighting what Gov. Pat Quinn calls "nature deficit disorder."

For example, he suggests canoe trips on the Cache River , family fishing, a butterfly hike, Hummingbird festivals, the 2009 Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Bike Ride, and a program on waterbugs.

McCloud says you don’t have to focus on state parks.  He says local parks also have lots of free events.

For a full list of activities, go to www.dnr.state.il.us/events/calendar.pdf.
