School bus hits, kills 11-year-old

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (STNG) -- A Schererville girl was killed Tuesday morning when she was struck by a school bus.
Around 8:15 a.m., the girl, 11, was driven to a different spot to catch the bus, according to Lake Central School Corp. Superintendent Gerald Chabot.
Grimmer Middle School parents and a yearbook confirmed the girl's name as Raina Nammari. Nammari's mother drove her to the stop at 75th Avenue and Pershing Road, and the girl ran to catch the bus. She tripped over a curb and was hit by the moving bus.
The twin sister of the girl was on the bus. Both were sixth-grade students at Grimmer Middle School.
Schererville police and fire departments responded to the accident.
Chabot said the girl was initially taken to Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital in Dyer for treatment, but she was transferred to a Chicago trauma center around noon. The girl died of internal injuries.
"The bus driver is devastated by this as is the entire Lake Central community," Chabot said.
Grimmer Principal Janet Zeck made an announcement about the accident at the end of the school day. Chabot said the school district also activated its telephone messaging system to alert parents. Grief counselors will be on hand for Grimmer students today.
This is the second death of a Grimmer student in the last three months.
Twelve-year-old Nathan T. Lundin, a sixth-grader, died March 26 of massive internal injuries suffered when a heavy steel table fell from a moving forklift at the Upright Iron Works in Griffith.
