Garbage fire in south suburb extinguished

EAST HAZEL CREST, Ill. (STNG) -- A fire that engulfed several large piles of garbage at a disposal facility in East Hazel Crest Sunday evening took crews about three hours to extinguish.
About 5 p.m., crews responded to a fire at the Homewood Disposal, located at 17441 Ashland Ave. in the southwest suburb, according to East Hazel Crest Fire Capt. Tom Anderson.
The facility is a transport station where the waste management company puts garbage, which is then loaded into other trucks and taken to a local dump, Anderson said.
Several large piles of garbage caught fire Sunday evening, and crews used "heavy equipment" to douse the fire, Anderson said.
The fire was out by 8 p.m., and Anderson said the facility should be able to operate normally, since the fire was contained to trash in a storage area.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation, but did not appear to be suspicious, Anderson said.
No injuries were reported.
