CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A lobbying group for the Chlorine industry is warning consumers not to swim in dirty pools.
The Water Quality and Health council has issued a press released stating it is offering ways to curb the tide of "Rising Recreational Water Illnesses."
However, spokesman Linda Golodner said she doesn't know of any people taken ill by pool born illnesses and said she doesn't know the extent of the problem.
She does cite a survey in which 20% of the adults surveyed admitted peeing in the pool. The survey further states 79% of those surveyed believe anyone who denies peeing in a pool is probably lying.
The survey also found that 35% admit they don't take a shower before swimming.
The Council says tips to spot dirty pools
Bad odors
Slimy Tile indicating algae growth.
Water so murky you can't see the pool drain.
The Chlorine council cites Center for Disease Control research indicating dirty swimming pools can transmit ear and skin infections, respiratory illness and diarrhea.
